Summer Burns: Tips for a Safe and Sun-Kissed Season

As the temperature rises and the sun graces us with its warm embrace, summer beckons us outdoors for fun and relaxation. However, amidst the joy of sun-soaked days, there's a potential risk that often goes overlooked – summer burns. From sunburn to burns from hot surfaces, the season brings its own set of hazards. Here's a guide on how to avoid these burns and ensure a safe and enjoyable summer.


Sunburn is perhaps the most common type of summer burn. Prolonged exposure to the sun's harmful UV rays can cause redness, pain, and even blistering. To avoid sunburn, it's crucial to apply a broad-spectrum sunscreen with at least SPF 50, reapplying every two hours or more frequently if swimming. Wearing protective clothing, like wide-brimmed hats and long sleeves, can also shield your skin from the sun's intense rays.

Hot Surface Burns:

Asphalt, sand, and metal surfaces can become scorching hot in the summer sun, leading to burns on unprotected skin. To prevent these burns, wear shoes on hot surfaces, especially if you're at the beach or pool. Use a towel or blanket to create a barrier between your skin and the hot sand, and exercise caution when touching or sitting on metal objects that have been exposed to the sun for an extended period.

 BBQ and Fire Safety:

Summer often means outdoor barbecues. While this activity is enjoyable, it poses a risk of burns if not handled carefully. Keep a safe distance from grills and fire pits, and always supervise children around open flames. Use proper grilling tools and protective gear, such as oven mitts, to minimise the risk of burns.

Stay Hydrated:

Dehydration can make your skin more susceptible to burns. Stay well-hydrated by drinking plenty of water, especially on hot days. Hydrated skin is less prone to damage, and it helps your body regulate temperature more effectively.

By staying vigilant and taking preventive measures, you can guard against summer burns and make the most of the sunny season. So, slather on that sunscreen, don your sun hat, and embrace the warmth safely. Your skin will thank you for it!
